Louisiana Alligator Hunt FAQ
Clear, LDWF-aligned guidance on licenses, legal methods, and what to expect.
Residents (guided): Alligator Sport Hunter License ($25)
Nonresidents (guided): Alligator Sport Hunter License ($150)
Must be accompanied by licensed alligator hunter/helper who possesses tags.
Get LicensedEast Zone: Opens last Wednesday in August
West Zone: Opens first Wednesday in September
Each zone remains open for 60 days. Harvest allowed only between official sunrise and sunset.
Legal: Hook & line, bow with barbed arrow, firearms (no shotguns)
Line requirements: Minimum 300-lb test, checked daily
Size limits: None during open season
Your quota equals the number of valid alligator hide tags you possess.
Tag immediately upon harvest (tail underside, 6 inches from end).
Keep tag affixed until tanning/processing.
You bring: Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, camera, clothes you don't mind getting dirty
We provide: All equipment, safety gear, boats, bait, tags, ice, breakfast
Optional: Cooler for meat, snacks, portable charger
All hunts are private. 1–4 hunters plus guide.
